OneMetal Talks to - Mark Chadbourn

"OneMetal: One of the most memorable examples of your work was the fomoire attack at the motorway service station during World’s End, where you combined the mundane blandness with insidious creepiness to excellent effect. How do you blend these two disparate elements together?

Mark: One of the themes of all my books is the point where fantasy – or what fantasy represents – collides head on with hard reality. The two opposites make each one sharper. So, it’s a matter of, the more fantastic the event, the blander the setting. The trick is really to define the reality very clearly, to ground it. Once you have that well-established, you can get away with anything because it’s so believable for the reader. I spend a lot of time travelling around to get the settings just right – to get the sights and sounds and smells and little, mundane details. I actually spent a whole day at that service station, watching people."

Author Spotlight - Jeremiah Tolbert

"What exactly is “mojo,” and how does it work?

Mojo is stored energy that can be used to power computational magic—it’s measured in bytes and megabytes and so on. It’s created by special collector “sprogs” tied together with time-wasting activities. Things that you do that don’t take up a lot of brain power, like playing silly games or filling out internet quizzes. It’s like potential human brain energy saved up for use later. I have some more elaborate explanations in the novel I’m working on set in the same universe, because mojo is a bit of a problem child in my worldbuilding for these stories, if I am being honest.

Basically, it’s mana, fuel for sprogs (spell programs). Net-mages hoard it like gold."

At the Mountains of Madness 5 - H. P. Lovecraft

"It’s only the very history of mankind!! Tune in to the new show with special guest, author I.N.J. Culbard (check out his graphic novel adaptation - available here in the U.S. and here in the U.K.

Damn! Is that more fresh music from Reber Clark, accompanied by the smooth vocal stylings of reader Joe Fria?

Yes. Yes it is."

Three arguments against the singularity - Charlie Stross

"Short version: Santa Claus doesn't exist.

Long version:

I'm going to take it as read that you've read Vernor Vinge's essay on the coming technological singularity (1993), are familiar with Hans Moravec's concept of mind uploading, and know about Nick Bostrom's Simulation argument. If not, stop right now and read them before you continue with this piece. Otherwise you're missing out on the fertilizer in which the whole field of singularitarian SF, not to mention posthuman thought, is rooted. It's probably a good idea to also be familiar with Extropianism and to have read the posthumanism FAQ, because if you haven't you'll have missed out on the salient social point that posthumanism has a posse.

(In passing, let me add that I am not an extropian, although I've hung out on and participated in their online discussions since the early 1990s. I'm definitely not a libertarian: economic libertarianism is based on the same reductionist view of human beings as rational economic actors as 19th century classical economics — a drastic over-simplification of human behaviour. Like Communism, Libertarianism is a superficially comprehensive theory of human behaviour that is based on flawed axioms and, if acted upon, would result in either failure or a hellishly unpleasant state of post-industrial feudalism.)"

Existential Threats - Charles Stross

"Here's another game it's useful to learn how to play if you want to write near-future science fiction: spot the Existential Threat.

An existential threat (for purposes of this thought experiment) is some phenomenon or activity — it may be natural or may be human-contrived — that threatens, in ascending order of threatliness, the survival of (1) technological civilization, (2) the human species itself, (3) life on Earth, or (4) the universe. It may also be qualified by the probability of it happening annually. Obviously, a type 3 event that occurs on average once every ten billion years is nothing to lose sleep over (that's the estimated life expectancy of our planet), while a type 1 event with a probability of 10% per annum is definitely worrying."

The 43 Antarean Dynasties 3 - Mike Resnick

"When the Antareans learned that Man's Republic wish to annex their world, they gathered their army in Zanthu and then marched out onto the battlefield, 300,000 strong. They were the cream of the planet's young warriors, gold of eye, the reticulated plates of their skin glistening in the morning sun, prepared to defend their homeworld."

The 43 Antarean Dynasties 2 - Mike Resnick

"Lobilia was the greatest poet in the history of Antares III. Although he died during the 23rd Dynasty, most of his work survived him. But his masterpiece, "The Long Night of the Exile" -- the epic of Bagata's Exile and his triumphant Return -- was lost forever."

The 43 Antarean Dynasties 1 - Mike Resnick

"To thank the Maker Of All Things for the birth of his first male offspring, the Emperor Maloth IV ordered his architects to build a temple that would forever dwarf all other buildings on the planet. It was to be made entirely of crystal, and the spire-covered roof, which looked like a million glistening spear-points aimed at the sun, would be supported by 217 columns, to honor his 217 forebears. When struck, each column would sound a musical note that could be heard for kilometers, calling the faithful to prayer."

Deluge 77 - Brian Keene

"“It’s liquefied,” Simon said, opening a hatch and stepping back inside the ship. “The debris. The mountains. Everything is liquefying.”

Sarah shut the hatch behind them and latched it. She wiped rain from her eyes. “The White Fuzz?”

“Indeed,” Simon said. “All matter on this planet is being turned into water. The planet still has a core, and is still rotating on its axis, so gravity still exists. Sooner or later though, even the planet’s core will begin to liquefy. As all this occurs, the Earth is being absorbed into another dimension called the Great Deep. I’ll explain in detail while we eat.”"

Comixology Digital Comics and pricing – An Analysis

I thought I would post this as of today, as it might be handy rather than paging through piles of Flash. It is usually only stuff I have read etc that I list here., not big long lists or summaries of what is out there like Quasar Dragon but I have read most of these.

Note that the dorkbrains at Marvel only like Appleoids, so don't bother clicking on those if you are after something to read on the web, you'll be wasting your time.

The Children of the Sky 00 - Vernor Vinge

"Vendacious raised his heads. “All true, my lord. And I am proud of my ‘treason.’ Woodcarver has allied with the mantis queen and her maggots.”

“Maggots?” Tycoon’s eyes were wide.

“Yes, my lord. ‘Mantis’ and ‘maggot’ refer to different aspects of the same creatures, humans as they call themselves. ‘Mantis’ is the appropriate term for the adult. After all, it is a two-legged creature, sneaky and vicious, but also solitary.”"

Author Spotlight - Alastair Reynolds

"This story was your first foray into military science fiction. Will you tell us about its origins?

Back in 2009 there was a bit of publicity surrounding my new ten book deal with Orion. As part of that, the Guardian newspaper asked me to write a short story that could be narrated (by me) and made available as a podcast. “Scales” is that story. It was written to a very tight brief, both in terms of the word count and the time I had to deliver it, but sometimes that can be a very refreshing way to work. Rather than faff around on something for months, get it done by Wednesday …"

The Clockwork Rocket 1 - Greg Egan

"“But how does that change things?” Yalda wondered. “If I see red light and violet light at the same time . . . then the slower, red light must have left the sun earlier.”

“Right. So how does that affect what you see?”

Yalda struggled to picture it. “Where the sun is in the sky depends on which way the world is facing when the light arrives, not when it left. The red light left earlier, but that makes no difference – we just see whatever reaches us at the time we're looking. So we see all the sun's colours in the same place, not spread out in a trail.”

Vito's rear eyes widened with approval. “That wasn't too difficult, was it?”

Yalda was encouraged, but she was still far from confident that everything made sense. “And the stars? Why are they so different?”

“The stars are really moving,” Vito reminded her. “Not just rising and setting with the turning of the world. Between the time when the red light we're seeing now left a star, and the time when the violet light we're seeing now followed it, the star will have moved far enough for us to see the different colours coming from different directions. When we look at the sun, the violet light and the red light follow the same road, even though the red light begins the journey earlier. When we look at a star, the violet light's coming to us from a different place, along a different path than the red.”

Yalda turned this over in her mind. “If the stars are really moving,” she said, “then why don't we see them move?” The coloured worms were all pinned to the rigid black sky, sharing, but never exceeding, the illusory motion that came from the world's shifting gaze. Why didn't they advance along their own trails, wriggling out of their constellations into fresh new patterns every night?"

Rule 34: Part Three TOYMAKER: The Leith Police Dismisseth Us - Charles Stross

"The fab's still warm from that bampot Malc's job, so you start by stuffing fresh cans of feedstock up its arse—this job's a hybrid, multiple plastics in the same structure and a skeleton made using the special brew that's been doing the rounds these past couple of months. The work-space is clean, and there's no crap lying around from the last run, which is good, and it's big enough that if you twist the model just so, you can make it in one run.

So you cable your laptop up to the fab, stick your special dongle in its side, swipe your thumb print across it for access, and log in to Evil Santa's workshop to download the templates for a bad night out in toytown."

Vast - Linda Nagata

"Point zero: initiate.

A sense kicked in. Something like vision. Not because it emulated sight, but because it revealed. Himself: Nikko Jiang-Tibayan. An electronic pattern scheduled to manifest at discrete intervals. Nikko Jiang-Tibayan. He'd been an organic entity once. Not now.

Point one: identify.

Personality suspended on a machine grid: He is the mind of the great ship, Null Boundary. His memories are many, not all accessible. He's locked much of his past away in proscribed data fields. He interrogates his remaining inventory, seeking an explanation. It comes in an amalgam of cloudy scents: the clinging stink of living flesh parasitized by aerobic bacteria. All defenses down. "Don't be sad, my love," she whispers. "Whatever the cost, you know we had to try."

He explores no farther.

Point two and counting: status check.

A scheduled mood shift floods his pattern with easy confidence. He confirms that Null Boundary has long ago reached maximum velocity, four tenths lightspeed. The magnetic scoops have been deactivated; the solenoids folded to a point piercing the increasingly thick interstellar medium. Duration? Over two centuries ship's time have elapsed since Null Boundary left Deception Well.

Two more centuries.

His past has become unconscionably deep for a man who'd been condemned to die at the age of thirty standard years. Still, death is never far off.

There are four telescopes mounted on tracks around the ship's hull. When two or more are fixed on the same object, their optical signals can be combined, creating an effective lens aperture far greater than any individual scope. At least two lenses are continuously fixed on the alien vessel that has hunted Null Boundary for one hundred fifty years.

It's a Chenzeme courser, an automated warship designed by a race that vanished millions of years before the human species even came into existence. It first appeared when Null Boundary was less than fifty years out of Deception Well. Then, it was moving at close to thirty nine percent lightspeed, on a course that would take it toward the star cluster called the Committee - opposite to Null Boundary's vector. Nikko watches its fleeting image, wondering if it will manage to get past the defenses of the human settlements there.

Nikko knows little about the Chenzeme, but he knows this much: their ships are not powered by conventional physics. The old murderers learned to tap the zero point field, that all-pervasive sea of energy where particles and anti-particles engage in a continuous dance of creation and annihilation. It's a deadly talent. With the zero point field to power their ships and guns, each Chenzeme vessel has far more energy at its command than any human installation. Their gamma ray lasers can burn away the atmosphere of a living world. Nikko has seen it happen"

Cube Root of Conquest - Rog Phillips

"To begin with," Carl Grinch said. "Space has three dimensions. We live in those three dimensions of length, breadth, and thickness. This is called the space continuum.

"There is also a three dimensional time continuum. This also has length, which is past-present-future. In addition it has width and breadth, which are approximated by the idea of simultaneity to a certain extent. This is not, however, the simultaneity of events co-existent in our one, three-dimensional space. All events we can be aware of are in one point in the time continuum, which moves along a single time line.

"Since there are only three dimensions of space, all things must be in our space. It is the time co-ordinates that determine whether we are aware of something or not. At this very moment there is an infinity of universes all occupying the same space, but each in a different position in time. They are existing now, but separated from us in a direction at right angles to the universal time stream.

"Mathematically, these other universes are expressed in co-ordinates that have the square root of a minus one as a coefficient. Also mathematically, these universes are imaginary, but not in the non-mathematical, mythical sense. They are just as real as ours, but relatively imaginary or relatively non-existent.

"All this has been known by others. They have also known that to make an imaginary value real it is only necessary to multiply it by the square root of a minus one. Then it becomes real. This fact became the entering wedge into the principal that enabled me to succeed in bridging the abyss of right angle time travel.

"As you know, many years ago the secret of single dimension time travel was solved. However, it would not answer our problem. Though it is true time travel, it amounts to nothing more than perfect stasis for controlled periods, and if destruction hits the space the time traveller is in, he is as vulnerable as he would be if not travelling. In order to escape that it is necessary to step over, so to speak, into one of the imaginary universes at right angles to us in the time continuum and travel forward there.

"So, all I had to do was discover some principal for multiplying a sector of space by the square root of a minus one. As you know, I did that. Then I discovered that there are gaps, so that it was impossible to discover another universe co-existent in space, without determining the basic equation of the time curve.

"As everyone knows, both time and space are curved, due to the distortion of mass on surrounding space and time. The exact equation for this curvature had to be determined.

"We knew beforehand that it had to be a cubic equation. Each cubic equation has three roots for every value of the independent variable, which is in space. It also has three roots for every value of the time. Basically, that means that if any primal unit exists in our space, it exists in three forms, the positive, the negative and the neutral. These units are the positron, the negatron, and the neutron. Those three are the three solutions in space to the co-ordinates of the existential primal point.

"But also there must be two other universes co-existent with ours in space, but separated sideways in time. They would be impossible to find with the machine without solving the cubic equation of the curvature of our time line."

"So you have solved that and contacted one of the other two universes," Hute Hitle broke in impatiently.

"Exactly," Carl Grinch said.

"Take me to it," Hute ordered. "I want to see for myself."

"Yes, my Leader," Carl said, clicking his heels again and bowing. The bow was lower than usual to hide the gleam of triumph that rose unbidden in the scientist's eyes.

From Bar to Bar interviews - Alastair Reynolds

"“The Revelation Space books mention the Dawn War, an important event that took place early in the history of the Galaxy. Do you have any plans for a novel or trilogy specifically about the Dawn War? Such a trilogy would make the “galactic history” complete, wouldn’t it?”

Big Al frowned and rubbed his eyes under the mask before answering.

“I wouldn’t be interested in writing it, since there wouldn’t be humans involved. The point, in a sense, is that it’s something I can be purposefully vague and mysterious about, because it happened millions and billions of years ago. Having to nail down the facts about it would be totally against the spirit of inventing it in the first place. Anyway, I’m not really interested in completeness,on any level. I’m definitely not the go-to guy for that!”"

Leigh Brackett: Heroic Fantasy at its Best - John M. Whalen

"Whenever there are discussions of heroic fantasy fiction, the usual names are trotted out: Howard, Leiber, Carter, Moorcock. But there is one name that is sometimes overlooked and really should be added to that list. Leigh Brackett (1915-1978) may best be known to some as a Hollywood screenwriter, but she also wrote some of the best heroic fantasy stories ever published."

Robopocalypse 1 - Daniel H. Wilson

"“Against the wall, Archos”--he pants--“against the wall, a human being becomes a different animal.”

“Perhaps. But you are animals just the same.”

The man slumps back against the door. He slides down until he is sitting, lab coat splayed on the ground. His head rolls to the side. Blue light from the computer screen flashes from his glasses.

His breathing is shallow. His words are faint. “We’re more than animals.”

The professor’s chest heaves. His skin is swollen. Bubbles have collected around his mouth and eyes. He gasps for a final lungful of air. In a last wheezing sigh, he says: “You must fear us.”"

The Future is Now - Chitralekha Basu

An article about SF writer Han Song :-

"His concern for the future of China in an increasingly mechanized, competitive and conflicted world remains an overriding one. A "staunch nationalist at heart", Han's anxiety that the Western model of development may not be the best for China runs through almost all that he writes.

"We want to be as powerful and as developed as the Western societies, but our ethos is different. Fast-track development does not agree with core Asian values," he says.

"Science, technology and modernization are not inherent in Chinese culture. They are like alien entities. If we buy into them, we turn ourselves into monsters, and that's the only way we can get along with Western notions of progress."

Tough As Rats: An Interview With - Michael Swanwick

"Darger and Surplus are both characters that are unapologetically self-interested. How did you plan to make it so that the reader would root for such immoral protagonists?

Confidence artists are charming, after all—it's part of their stock in trade. Also, the people Darger and Surplus feed off of are so monstrous that one cannot hope wishing for their comeuppance. But, more than that, my two heroes have no idea what scoundrels they are. They think that they're good people who are having a perfectly pleasant time. In this, they are completely deluded, of course. But it makes them excellent company. Aside from a moral blind spot or two, they're decent enough. I'm absolutely certain that they'd go out of their way to rescue a damsel in distress, a child lost in the wilderness, or a kitten stuck in a tree."

Popular Publications Part 3: The People Who Made the Pulps - Frederik Pohl

"Well, let’s slow down a moment here so I can paint you a word picture. The entire suite of Popular Publications’ offices on the top, or 20th, floor of the structure called the Bartholomew Building was in the approximate shape of a capital letter T, which someone had pushed over so it was lying on its side. The down stroke of the T, which now ran east and west, was shortened, leaving on one side just room for three small offices and on the other side the wall that kept visitors penned in the waiting room until our receptionist-switchboard girl, Ethel Klock, said they could go on in. The cross-stroke of the T, now running north and south and thus paralleling the nearby East River, housed all the rest of Popular’s employees except for the two on the (former) downstroke, which is to say Ken White, with his Black Mask, and me. (I believe a deceased pulp called Railroad Stories had once been edited from the now-vacant third of those downstroke offices.) "

Locus Roundtable: In Conversation Karen Burnham and Ted Chiang

"To follow on from my recent post on rogue AIs (and to celebrate the lack of missiles being launched by a newly awakened Skynet), I decided to post this podcast that I recorded with Ted Chiang recently. While we start off talking about Greg Egan’s work, we move into a broader discussion of AIs–how they may need to be evolved and grown, and how they are sometimes characters in sf, but often they’re simply convenient tools. Ted makes the point that this dichotomy is similar to the status of ‘slaves’ vs. ‘people’ in human society. We also talk about clone races, and the economics of developing clones and AIs to do things that humans can often do just as well and much cheaper. In the context of clone armies this leads to a comment about raising “100,000 angry babies” which is one hilarious and scary mental image that somehow got left out of George Lucas’ movies."
