http://www.lcrw.net/kellylink/sth/smp-dl.php?file=Kelly_Link_Stranger_Things.txt

This is not really my thing it appears, and as such, this is a 3 average for me, pretty much. What is cool though is the Creative Commons release, as the chance I would have seen it otherwise is zero. That being said, there are a few worthwhile stories here, but a lot of light and fluffy and very missable, and way too long when they get to part 18 of doing the same thing.

The Short Stories Of H. G. Wells - H. G. Wells

http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0609221.txt

This is a collection of collections

The Time Machine and Other Stories
The Stolen Bacillus And Other Stories
The Plattner Story And Others
Tales Of Time And Space
Twelve Stories And A Dream

-----

This collection takes The Time Machine, which is presumably a longish novella in actuality to do this, and adds some of the pieces from A Door in the Wall and Other Stories - including all the best stories from there, so not a bad idea, really.

Time Machine : The Time Machine - H. G. Wells
Time Machine : The Empire Of The Ants - H. G. Wells
Time Machine : A Vision Of Judgment - H. G. Wells
Time Machine : The Land Ironclads - H. G. Wells
Time Machine : The Beautiful Suit - H. G. Wells
Time Machine : The Door In The Wall - H. G. Wells
Time Machine : The Pearl Of Love - H. G. Wells
Time Machine : The Country Of The Blind - H. G. Wells

It will come as no surprise that the protagonist in this story, the traveller, invents a time machine and uses it to venture into the future.

The society that he ends up in seems amazing for a brief time, then he realises that all is not as it seems. There is a large underclass that is terribly exploited to produce all this for the eloi, as they are called.

The underclass are named Morlocks, and it is here that the Time Traveler's sympathies reside.

This collection of stories ends with several mainstream tales, that are really of not much interest, although the last one is ok. If you aren't interested in those you can stop at 'The Purple Pileus'

Those aside, In the Abyss, Pollock and the Porroh Man, The Red Room and the Sea Raiders are all quite good.

As such, the whole thing averages a bit over 3.

The Door In the Wall and Other Stories - H. G. Wells

http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/456

Another collection somewhat like Twelve Stories and a Dream, with a mixture of genres. This one throws in a couple of darkly humoured pieces in the last three stories. The best are Empire of the Ants and The Country of the Blind.

The Plattner Story and Others - H. G. Wells

http://www.gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0609221.txt

This collection of stories ends with several mainstream tales, that are really of not much interest, although the last one is ok. If you aren't interested in those you can stop at 'The Purple Pileus'

Those aside, In the Abyss, Pollock and the Porroh Man, The Red Room and the Sea Raiders are all quite good.

As such, the whole thing averages a bit over 3.

Plattner Story : The Plattner Story - H. G. Wells
Plattner Story : The Argonauts and the Air - H. G. Wells
Plattner Story : The Story of the Late Mr. Elvesham - H. G. Wells

The Mathematics of the Magazine - 2007 Best Magazine Issues

2007 Best SF Magazine Issues for Fiction

Basically, these all have electronic issues. Hub's weekly didn't have a stretch that would have qualified, and didn't get around to Strange Horizons. There are a couple of Clarkesworld/Ideomancer I haven't got to from 2007, but the probability of those making this list is pretty much nil from a quick look. There are only 3 Interzone electronic issues, as they just started.

I will just compare these on the average for the fiction in each issue, not overall - the list would be different then.

From those I read, that is, here are those that had an average above 3.50.

4.00 New Ceres 2 (2 of Australia's best ever short story writers in Stephen Dedman and Lucy Sussex, plus Jay Lake and Cat Sparks write for this shared world planetary romance issue - URL New Ceres Issue 2")

3.92+ Asimov's 293 (+a 2000 magazine, but I rated it this year)
3.83* Ideomancer 06 03 (*only 3 stories)
3.75 FSF 667
3.75 Andromeda Spaceways 29 (very rare to get an all above average issue, bolstered by the 4.5 for Kevin Veale's A Day In Her Lives, easily one of the best stories of the year that I saw, anywhere)
3.75** Clarkesworld 04 (**only 2 stories)
3.75** Clarkesworld 05 (**only 2 stories)
3.75** Clarkesworld 07 (**only 2 stories)
3.67 Interzone 213
3.64 Helix 04
3.64 FSF 665
3.63 FSF 660
3.61 JBU 09
3.60 FSF 661
3.59 Analog 916
3.58+ Asimov's 294 (+a 2000 magazine, but I rated it this year)
3.57 Asimov's 372
3.55 Asimov's 381 382
3.55 Subterranean Online 03
3.54 Asimov's 375 376

The Best New Stories of 2007

These are the best stories new from 2007 that I read (of which there were over 700 at a rough count). Thought I'd break it into sections so the ones on the web can be looked for, if anyone is interested.

Verthandi's Ring - Ian McDonald
Dead Money - Lucius Shepard
Stars Seen Through Stone - Lucius Shepard
Muse Of Fire - Dan Simmons
A Day In Her Lives - Kevin Veale

Helix 07 - William Sanders and Lawrence Watt-Evans

A reasonable issue. Certainly well above the mark for non-major magazines, but a might below the top. A 3.36 story average here.

Another interesting column by Webster on H. Beam Piper, although I knew a bit more about him than some of the others he has talked about.

John Barnes expounds on his 'Science Fiction lifespan' article from an earlier issue by talking about how people looking back might view this period of history up to say the fall of the Berlin Wall as the 75 years war, and relates SF interest to that a bit.

Editor Watt-Evans explains why he has been too slack to have a story published in Helix.

Helix 07 : Suicide Drive - Charlie Anders
Helix 07 : Seraphim - Maya Bohnhoff
Helix 07 : Night of the Living POTUS - Adam-Troy Castro
Helix 07 : The Last Man's First Year on Earth - David W. Goldman
Helix 07 : Salvager's Gold - Selina Rosen
Helix 07 : Family Tree - Vaughan Stanger
