David Gemmell an Appreciation - Wayne MacLaurin and Steve Tompkins
http://www.blackgate.com/articles/gemmelllegacy.htm
A great article about the now sadly departed brilliant author's work.
There aren't too many books given how many I'd like to read that if I happen to pick them up off the shelf like the Drenai tales by chance that become odds on favorites to get read again.

Alien repulsion otter assist.
On an obscure planet an alien force that had previously tried to take territory in the Hub has a breakaway political group that decides to do some smalltime invasion.
A smart scientist, a local agent and their highly intelligent new species mutant otter friends are up to the challenge, though, at least until the Federation warships can get there to offer a hand.
A fast-paced action adventure with some superhuman subterfuge and an interesting epilogue type overview of some of what is really going on.

Beyond 10000 - The 2007 Fiction Season by Score
BEYOND 10000 - The 2007 Fiction Season by Score
BREAKDOWN BY WORKS
5 works to qualify, in both these blogs there are around 2700+ authors or teamups, and last time I think there were 200+ qualified, now 400+.
As far as the 2007 fiction season goes :
I am quite sure Doctor Asimov will crack the double century for next time, and Swanwick's form looks set to have him be a big chance.
Dowling and Martin have chances for the ton.
Kress and Reed don't look like going out and half centuries seem certain. Resnick and Stross are likely solid in the long run, and Heinlein, Dick, Dozois, Clarke, Schmidt and Van Gelder look like chances for your slower, plodding innings to rack up a good score, too.
Newcomers with talent and with hitting power from that overpopulated 'B' area seem to have sprung up - Barron, Bacigalupi, and (E) Bear, and at the rate the latter racks up the score a half century is a definite chance.

Beyond 10000 - The 2007 Fiction Season Overview
BEYOND 10000 - The 2007 Fiction Season Overview
This is combined from Not Free SF Reader and Free SF Reader. Note that the blogspot blog counts are usually wrong as far as I can see, but somewhere in the area. Hence, these are different being the actual numbers.
Likely xmas 2008 makes it before 15000, speaking of favorites, I would think.
Still have 250 odd novels to go, and maybe a dozen anthologies and collections if I ever track them down again as far as what I can remember having read. As far as the underrepresented from that, then Wolverton, Farmer, Donaldson and Forsyth, along the the kids stuff like Dixon and Dick of the Doctor Who massive output.
Lying around unread now includes a lot of old magazines, Australian anthologies, Year's Best and other assorted anthologies, and a bunch of collections, as well as many a garden variety as well as hero novel.

Subterranean Online 04 - William Schafer
An ok issue, with an average of 3.33 for stories. Another Bear column, and a good column by Joe Lansdale talking about his connection to Robert E. Howard, and in particular, Almuric. Nothing outstanding, but a couple of quite good stories and a reasonable mag overall. There is even a pirate story.
However, that being said, the average for the 4 issues for the year was 3.37. For a new online effort, that is really rather impressive, as my average for 'Major Magazines' that I have read is 3.40 for the modern area that I have read and rated (Analog/Asimovs/FSF/JBU/Interzone/Weird Tales).

The Sagan Diary begins with a tech type whingeing about how the specially grown Special Forces types aren't really allowing full access to their brainpal records when they change to new bodies for settlement.
It then changes to Jane reminiscing, somewhat lyrically at times about stages and times in her life before she undergoes a body swap to go and settle on a planet.
The audio version is read by several different women, some sf writers.

Bag Lady - Walter Jon Williams
http://www.wildcardsbooks.com/lostarchives/baglady.html
From the new wild cards site lost archives.
Apparently - and this story is given as an intro to the piece - a concept story that Williams did to show that Wild Cards could work.
Not surprised they liked the idea - this is very good, Modular Man, Black Shadow, the shifter, and various other references, including the giant ape.
Very cool to see.

Apparently - and this story is given as an intro to the piece - a concept story that Williams did to show that Wild Cards could work.
Not surprised they liked the idea - this is very good, Modular Man, Black Shadow, the shifter, and various other references, including the giant ape.
Very cool to see.

The Romance Of Golden Star - George Griffith
http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0603371.txt
Inca mummy girl, old school.
That is probably about all you need to know, added on to a nice little war and confrontation late in the piece : -
"I had not forgotten that old training which taught an Inca warrior to
look on near-approaching death with unmoved eyes and unshaken heart, and
this was only such a hazard as I had taken a score of times before. I
bade Hartness lead Ruth and Golden Star into the temple behind us, so
that they should not see what was about to be done. Then I took my place
on the throne again and ordered Djama to be raised and stood on his
feet.
He rose of himself, very pale but calm and strong in his own evil
strength, fearing nothing, as became a man for whom death had no terrors
and, it might be, few secrets. We looked each other in the eyes in
silence, and in the midst of an utter stillness that had fallen on the
vast throng, until Hartness came back. Then I said,--
'That is enough, Laurens Djama. Choose now what death you will die, but,
for your own sake and Joyful Star's, choose a quick one.'
Although my voice was as the voice of doom to him, yet he did not quail
even then, for if his heart was black it was very strong, and fear had
never entered into it. He drew himself up to the full height of his
stature and, looking me full in the eyes, he said as quietly as I had
ever heard him speak,--
'That choice is always mine, whether you give it to me or not. You have
threatened me with death before and I have told you that you could not
kill me. Now watch and see if I spoke the truth.'"

The Climb to the Stars : The Growth of (free online) Space Opera - A Mastodon ebook
The Climb to the Stars : The Growth of (free online) Space Opera - A Mastodon ebook
edited by H. E. Avenoklewz and I. M. Nutsireus
Mastodon ebooks is an imprint of no-one. You think anyone is that silly?
All rights to all compilations of ancient Tellurian material abolished in the Copyfighter Dktrvian rebellion victory constitution, July 17, 2671.
This ebook is a Virtual Anthology of pre 1960s (or as close as we can work out, that is a hell of a long time ago, ancient literature fans) era Tellurian 'science fiction' written entertainment material, wherein the editors do commit short novelage in the process of availability and variety over quality and quantity when necessary.
Said cheapskate publisher (probably wisely, it must be said given the lack of intellect, experience or knowledge of said editorial staff) has left little space for an introduction.
So, H. E. says Planetary Romance equals lollygagging around the Tellurian solar system, or chopping possibly funnily colored aliens up with swords or maybe blasting them with the odd raygun for variety.
I.M. suggests that Space Opera is tooling around large distances between stars, generally in spaceships and frequently blowing stuff up. Or, to paraphrase the great philospher S'an Knnery from the planet Caledonia IV : never bring an asteroid to a contra-terrene planet fight.
They will also point out that they most definitely make no claims to having been diligent enough to either read or check this, and will cheerfully make the waffling excuse 'hey, it is only the 28th century, you think we can easily classify entertainment, yet?' They will admit that it is more than 100% quantumly certain they have missed plenty.
The editors, however, are competent enough to point out that in the interests of authenticity, the following work is provided in archaic html 'www' technology, and each entry is what was once known as a 'URL' which was accessed via an optical pointing device apparently likened to a rodent.

Almuric - Robert E. Howard
http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks07/0701111.txt
A sword and planet adventure in the Burroughs tradition. If you like that sort of thing I am pretty sure you will like this one.
Of the protagonist:
"Esau Cairn was, in short, a freak--a
man whose physical body and mental bent leaned back to the primordial.
Born in the Southwest, of old frontier stock, he came of a race
whose characteristics were inclined toward violence, and whose
traditions were of war and feud and battle against man and nature. The
mountain country in which he spent his boyhood carried out the
tradition. Contest--physical contest--was the breath of life to him.
Without it he was unstable and uncertain. Because of his peculiar
physical make-up, full enjoyment in a legitimate way, in the ring or
on the football field was denied him. His career as a football player
was marked by crippling injuries received by men playing against him,
and he was branded as an unnecessarily brutal man, who fought to maim
his opponents rather than win games. This was unfair. The injuries
were simply resultant from the use of his great strength, always so
far superior to that of the men opposed to him. Cairn was not a great
sluggish lethargic giant as so many powerful men are; he was vibrant
with fierce life, ablaze with dynamic energy. Carried away by the lust
of combat, he forgot to control his powers, and the result was broken
limbs or fractured skulls for his opponents."
Desperate for a place to fit in he gets himself transported to another world by a man who now recounts his story.
And a dangerous place it is to arrive with nothing.
Needless to say, he gets over that, and soon swords, warriors, winged she-devils, evil queens and more are all over the place as he gets into trouble and doing some good that Conan himself would certainly be happy to have been involved in.
There are bad, violent, torturing things to be overthrown, and Esau Carin is the man to lead the army to do it.
