'"So why do you think you’re John Carter?" I asked him.

"Because I am."

"Why not Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon–or the Scarlet Pimpernel for that matter?"

"Why aren’t you Doc Savage or the Shadow?" he replied. "Or James Bond for that matter?"

"I never claimed to be a fictional character," I said.

"Neither did I. I am John Carter, formerly of Virginia, and I am trying to return to my princess."

"Stark naked in a blizzard?"

"My clothes do not survive the transition, and I am not responsible for the weather," he said. '

Overclocked - Cory Doctorow

While Doctorow has written some decent novels, it would seem his superior skills lie in the short story arena, as this really is an outstanding collection with the quality of the work he has put together here.

He also keeps writing more, which these days all seem to be high quality compared to some of the efforts in his early collected work.

Great stuff to be found here, as he riffs on old SF stories and the near future.

Overclocked : Anda's Game - Cory Doctorow
Overclocked : I Robot - Cory Doctorow
Overclocked : I Row-Boat - Cory Doctorow
Overclocked : After the Siege - Cory Doctorow

A chilling tale of the future when Z-Printers abound, and it becomes a crime for the common man to have one, for the typical fascist reasons. Then one of the protagonist's family, has an epiphany at the end of the story.

Wherein Red Saviour believes in good old-fashioned police brutality. Or at least officially sanctioned by colleagues after attack brutality.

Or, to put it another way, crims taking advantage of devastation and pissing off ultra-powerful women who probably have diplomatic status anyway are 1) stupid and 2) broken. As in limbs, not morale.

The hyper-linked story thing is a nifty idea, but that parts weren't as interesting as Ruth Nestvold's piece done the same way, for example.

Overall, for volumes 4, 5 and 6 so far the story average for Ideomancer is around 2.98, so about the same as Hub, meaning the occasional good story. The interviews they have done have been pretty good overall though.

The average for this issue is 3.29. The column is about Leigh Brackett this time, and worth a look as you may be surprised at some of the films she wrote, for example. Another well-done piece.

As a whole then, after six issues, Helix average 3.36 per story, and has 60% above average, which, really, is rather impressive for a free webzine. Nice work.

Check them out, and throw them a couple of bucks if you like it, definitely seems to be worth it.

Helix 01 - William Sanders and Lawrence Watt-Evans

http://www.helixsf.com/archives/Jul06/index.htm

The fiction here is of the ordinary variety, a 3.14 average. The first few stories were decent, and it tailed off. A wide variety of type of story, though.

The column by Webster giving a detailed overview of Mars fiction was good, and there is a shorter piece talking about what alternate history is, plus a few reviews, which is enough to up the score for the mag above average.

Flurb 03 - Rudy Rucker

A bit of an improvement over the last issue (3.18 average), and two good stories, as compared to just above average. As the editor says, this is a 'double issue', so a bit more impressive from that point of view, In fact, if you look at it, and including the already done 4, the actual story average has gone up each issue.

There are some cool photos too, including a nifty dogs swimming scene, a kid with a fruit bat, and some rather large bird nests. A one really, really ugly two bloke tongue shot. :)

A garden variety dry academic essay on female roles in Arthurian stories and different ways to handle it, a la Bradley. So if you don't like that sort of writing, don't read this.

An article about looking at how to do a superhero universe where characters age, although the writer seems to have a problem spelling comics correctly from paragraph to paragraph. He gives some examples of titles that might be similar now.

Carnacki the Ghost Finder - William Hope Hodgson

http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/10832

The setup with this story collection is that Carnacki is a ghost buster, and every so often he invites a bunch of mates around for a genial evening at his place, involving dinner and drinks and a fag, while keeping them waiting for the good bit.

The good bit being a retelling of one of his recent exploits, and pretty good quality stories they are.

This issues includes an essay by Kim Stanley Robinson, of sorts, about tooling around the Swiss Alps and avoiding getting sliced by helicopters.

Reviews here of Ragamuffin and Brasyl, and of an L. Timmel DuChamp series I hadn't heard of. Also a quite interesting interview with Tobias Buckell.

One excellent story find, too. Horseracing fantasy, at that.

One thing they could do is make the story titles links, as well as the pictures, that would be more intuitive, I think. The tabs at the top look like links that might give you all science fiction or whatever, but looks like they are just images that do nothing. Also a bit confusing perhaps.

Helix 06 - William Sanders and Lawrence Watt-Evans

This magazine was a pleasant surprise. Some columns: Bud Webster gives an excellent overview of Cordwainer Smith for those not familiar. I'll also note that Baen has a new book coming, and has some stories online, all of which you will find ratings/links for on Free SF Reader if you search or scroll down to the right to the Science section.

John Barnes has an interesting article that suggests that entertainment genres have roughly a 3 generation of 70 year lifespan, until they become 'undead' or no longer vital, and suggests SF is 10 years past that. He mentions Elizabethan theatre, jazz, opera, etc., as examples that fit this Then he gives reasons to still be interested.

The story lineup is quite strong, with a 3.36 average.

The one thing that is very annoying though is the dark black background that makes reading with that surrounding hard on the eyes - so sticking them on the Palm, or in Simon Haynes excellent spacejock software yBook paperback emulator software with a more pleasant background (and adjustable) is what I did.

To me, black backgrounds are the stuff of crappy fan horror and warez and porn link sites, not something that is pleasant to read. Have your space banner if you want, but the rest is not so good.
