The Periodic Table of Science Fiction - Michael Swanwick

This is an immense undertaking, and to pull it off requires some considerable level of talent. Going by his other stories, Swanwick has this. However, 118 vignettes, or short-shorts or whatever you want to call theme, and keeping it entertaining? Even harder.

Rating this is a little different I suppose, as generally it is very unlikely that you get a 4.5 or 5 for such a piece, could happen, but didn't here. To average 3.32 over 118 pieces by one author at such short length is very impressive.

However, you get some scientific background in chemistry, and a lot of amusement, from sf to superhero in this collection.

Reading and rating them is a long enough task, writing them is a mind boggling feat to contemplate. Bonus points for audacity and verve I think.

A genre for everyone here even if you don't want to read them all. Well worth having a look at online.

Symbol given in the list, actual name of the element with the rating to include both.

Axiom-Man - A. P. Fuchs

http://www.apfuchs.com/axiommanfreesuperheroebook.html

If this guy ever forms a supergroup, what would it be - the Rules of Justice?

Then you could have Law Man, Theorem Girl, Mr Proof, Lady Lemma, Corollary Woman, and Captain Hypothesis teaming up with him.

Axiom-Man is a rookie superhero, who operates in Winnipeg. It appears a strange blue guy in a computer delivered him his abilities, strength, flight and energy blasts from his eyes. Axiom-beams?

This short book alternates between his origin, and his current situation. That being, he has an average ordinary job in a call centre, and pines over the vapid chick in a nearby cubicle, whose intellectual thought of the day is 'which superhero should I have the hots for'?

He has to deal with the nuts and bolts himself, making a costume, hoping not to sweat while wearing it at work, nicking in to the lunch room to check the tv for emergency news. His boss, of course, is telling him off a lot for being late, ducking out of work, all the usual.

Everything changes when a new superhero turns up named Redsaw. Axiom-Man discovers he can tell when he is nearby, and there is a strange black cloud around that possibly have something to do with it.

A subplot revolves around the activities of Redsaw, and the problems of where he gets his powers from.

Needless to say, these two come into conflict over working methods, and the call centre cheerleader is in there somewhere.

This is a straight superhero story, the main character, Gabriel, is an complete boy scout type. He is trying to be nerdier as a disguise, and trying to do good, as you see when the US military tries to recruit him.

It is obviously set up to continue in another installment, as towards the end you find out that the advent of these two superbeings has religious overtones, and Axiom-Man appears to be on a mission, Blues Brothers style, with Redsaw theologically opposed, presumably.

This is all quite well done, except for the odd typos early on (a car has breaks for example). However, this is at a lower rate than some of the huge publisher efforts I have seen recently.

Recommended for a bit of old-school superheroing.

http://manybooks.net/titles/nortonaother06storm_over_warlock.html

Storm over Warlock is another boy and his animals story. The protagonist is an animal handler, and the genetically altered wolverines are his responsibility. One of his enemies lets them out to try and get him in trouble, so he has to go and find 'em.

This gives him the Luke Skywalker role, while said enemy and the rest of the people suffer the Owen and Beru fate.

He is soon hunted himself, leading him to strange adventures, conflict, and even stranger aliens, the Wyvern, with their magical illusionist abilities.

Star Rangers - Andre Norton

http://www.webscription.net/10.1125/Baen/0671318276/0671318276__19.htm

This is also called The Last Planet.

Central Control is failing, and with it, the Space Patrol. They are running out of planets, resources, money, and everything else.

Star Rangers tells the story of a beaten up old ship, on a final mission. They end up on a planet controlled by your basic supervillain bent on world domination, with the nasty twist that he is a supremely powerful telepath.

While a good old space adventure of this sort, it is a little deeper than that, with issues of prejudice, xenophobia, etc. being important throughout.

Subterranean Online 03 - William Schafer

http://subterraneanpress.com/index.php/magazine/summer-2007/

For a free online magazine this is a rather impressive lineup, and you get a rather fine issue, at a 3.55 issue (The same as Asimov's 381 382 I just finished earlier). Absolutely worth looking at.
For this price, and with all those authors, you are quite crazypants if you don't have a look. Any magazine would be happy to have this lineup and story quality I am sure.

An Elizabeth Bear special, with a couple of columns, and more than one piece. I have read a few of her books, all good. With the stories here being bits of others it seems it looks like those, fantasy rather than SF, will be pretty good, too. With supernatural detectives I guess she could expand an earlier story and get a zombie western to add another couple of genre notcehes to the novel collection. :)

Joe R. Lansdale's look at Robert E. Howard's Almuric is also interesting - a book I have yet to get around to reading. Surprised to find this here.

A few reviews, including the New Space Opera and the Space Opera Renaissance, of particular interest.

There is a reason people don't talk about this one much I think. That reason being it is bad.

The earth is going to enter a nasty phenomenon, no-one believes Challenger when he warns them.

So, he and his mates are prepared, no-one else is.

However, rather than dying, everyone gets better, and nothing really happens, except an offhand remark about the problems from accidents etc. when the poison gets everyone.

It is lacking in the entertaining banter and blustering of some of the others.

Not well done.

Accelerando - Charles Stross

Download Accelerando

Wow. Mind blowing. Oh, and don't get a cat. It may grow on you slowly at first, but stick with it, it is well worth it. This is the first book I can think of that had lobsters as characters, and I think that was where I first came across the author, in one of the Dozois Year's Best anthologies, where one of the stories that were changed to make this novel was published. The evolution of humanity, society, economics and others via the impacts of technology.

This is Neuromancer and Snow Crash good.

Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel - Emmuska Orczy

http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0602711.txt

Again, this is not a full length novel, but a group of shorter works. So the title is apt, as there are indeed several adventures of Sir Percy and the gang to be found in these pages.

A couple of the opening paragraphs are pretty funny:

"You really are impossible, Sir Percy! Here are we ladies raving, simply
raving, about this latest exploit of the gallant Scarlet Pimpernel, and
you do naught but belittle his prowess. Lady Blakeney, I entreat, will
you not add your voice to our chorus of praise, and drown Sir Percy's
scoffing in an ocean of eulogy?"

and

"Oh!" he said, "do not ask me to inculcate hero-worship into this mauvis
sujet. If you ladies cannot convert him to your views, how can I...a
mere man...?"

And His Highness shrugged his shoulders. There were few entertainments
he enjoyed more than seeing his friend Sir Percy Blakeney badgered by
the ladies on the subject of their popular and mysterious hero, the
Scarlet Pimpernel.

The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel - Emmuska Orczy

http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/5805

Chauvelin seeks him here, he seeks him there, many, many times. The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel has a different structure as the book is a collection of short stories or escapades about people that the elusive Pimpernel himself has helped to rescue, along with his intrepid band of adventurers.

So, if you want a small dose of Pimpernel action now and again, this one is for you.

League of the Scarlet Pimpernel : 01 SIR PERCY EXPLAINS - Emmuska Orczy
