New Ceres 1 - Alisa Krasnostein

Old version is here, for reference.

This is an interesting shared world experiment. It is not something a few fans just though up, by the look of it, and it looks like quite a lot of work and detail has gone into the background.

There are some fun 'fictional' non-fiction pieces, as well. Coffee and tourist guides to the local area, but the coolest thing I saw from my point of view was astronomical data for the system. See here :- Planetary System

The writing lineup was intriguiing before I even got to the rest, which was why I had a look to start with. MacArthur and Flinthart I like already, and a couple of Roberts pieces recently I had come across have been very entertaining.

Before doing story ratings, the first thing that sprung to mind when considering perhaps a brief overview sentence was Deadwood meets Majipoor, perhaps by way of the Snow Queen.

Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright - Maxine McArthur
Scandal at the Feast of Saturn - Tansy Rayner Roberts
She Walks in Beauty - Dirk Flinthart

So, as it turns out, all the stories I thought were above average, and there is something here for period piece fans, action types, or basic SF, which I think again shows some thought in the whole process.

Considering it as a whole, the added parts, and opportunity for interaction are certainly enough to have this called good, although the first version I read had a dodgy colour scheme. (Not that lynx -dump doesn't fix that for linux and other geeks, but not for the average reader). This has been rectified and reading now is quite pleasant as I go back and look at the first issue again. A download for PDA and other handheld ebook readers is a good idea, and a printable version as well, probably.

It also made me interested in checking out issue 2 and wondering when that would be available (just in the last few days it appears). That is always a good sign.

Therefore, I will give it a good, overall.

http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/711

Romance boring until Baboon Witch Woman sticks the knife into marriage.

or, longer version:

Allan does what Allan does best for the first part, which is run around Africa, and deal with animals and miscreants with aplomb. Also with rifles. A chunk of this you could be forgiven for thinking you had fallen into a dull Victorian romance.

He actually comes across a woman he decides he really likes and can put up with, and pops the question. Unfortunately for him, the baboon lady decides to manifest some supernatural superpowers and abscond with the affianced female to have her wicked violent way.

A lovely origin story. Dr. Watson, returned from a war and in need of lodgins is led to Baker Street. In this fine location resides one Sherlock Holmes.

They are soon on the trail of a mystery that involves a corpse, and a word scrawled in blood on a wool. Then there are dodgy mormons and a bit of wild west action.

Perhaps my least favorite of the longer Holmes works, at least the last time I read it, causing it to slip below the magic number. To be revisited at some stage. This in no way means it is bad, just not as beloved, or perhaps as brilliant as the others. You still can't go wrong with Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.

I have lost track of how many times I have read this, or how many different adaptations I have watched, or listened to. I still enjoy it every single time. A true classic. Suspense, horror and sneakiness abound, particularly between the major characters. What is going on? It keeps you captivated all along, should not be too many people that don't like this. Large black ghost hounds, your Jane Austen type gentlemen in trouble, dodgy locals, and the brilliance of Holmes.

Here is the fist collection of Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. 'A Scandal in Bohemia', 'The Red-Headed League' and 'The Adventure of the Speckled Band' stand out to me. 'The Boscombe Valley Mystery' is also of note, for secondary characters. Most excellent mystery and adventure to be found.

This is one of the Sherlock Holmes stories that absolutely should not be missed.

You also see Sherlock Holmes brother, the large Mycroft, in The Greek Interpreter, another must read. There is even a story there for the horse racing fans, with 'Silver Blaze'. More fantastic work.

There is still the fun of The Sussex Vampire to be found, and the finger on the side of the nose style of The Illustrious Client to enjoy, and Holmes is still Holmes.

The Return of Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle

http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/108

A cause for great rejoicing, an event as momentous as this one. The Great Detective is back. Imagine the hype and hoopla if this was happening in the 21st century! After his presumed death at Reichenbach and the hands of the man many readers would have happily throttled, he lives! Take that, Moriarty, you dastardly cur! Again, more Sherlock is fantastic, and on to 'The Adventure of the Empty House'

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle

http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/834

This Sherlock Holmes volume has the awesome 'The Final Problem', with that dastardly evil supervillain Professor Moriarty being introduced, leading to the confrontation at Reichenbach Falls.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle

http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1661

Here is the fist collection of Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. 'A Scandal in Bohemia', 'The Red-Headed League' and 'The Adventure of the Speckled Band' stand out to me. 'The Boscombe Valley Mystery' is also of note, for secondary characters. Most excellent mystery and adventure to be found.
